The Icon Gilding & Decorative Surfaces Group is proud to announce a one day symposium on ‘Devotional Objects’.

The aim of the symposium is to bring together conservation and non-conservation professionals with an interest in the preservation of objects that carry intrinsic sacred value. Talks will investigate the role of the conservator, the relevance of source communities, the influence of host institutions or private owners, and ethical consideration involved in the preservation of artefacts and collections intended for worship.

Research into materials, techniques and ethical decision making will fuel ongoing discussion on the preservation of devotional objects throughout the day, and afterwards at the reception.

The event will be chaired by Icon Chief Executive, Sara Crofts. The progra programme of talks includes:

  • Alex Owen, The conservation of an early C14th Japanese figure depicting the Bodhisattva Seishi
  • Loredana Mannina, The wooden sculpture of water-moon Guanyin from the Song period of China. Decision making and conservation treatment of a Buddhist figure from a (private) western collection
  • Maria Sanchez, Catholic Devotional Images in Spain: a brief approach to their understanding nowadays and their restoration
  • Maila Salmaso and Ona Curto Graupera, Case study: Two treatments in comparison
  • Teresa Heady, Shaping the Sacred: Conserving highly damaged Thangkas
