Acquisition of the analytical tools to deal with methodological problems and theoretical orientations of restoration; acquisition of the ability to deal critically with technical and methodological orientations in different chronologies; acquisition of good familiarity with the literary sources related to the history of restoration.

PART ONE: (40 hours)
- Introduction to the subject

History of restoration from antiquity to the contemporary:
- ancient world and medieval age;
- Renaissance and early modern age: transformation of polyptychs; discoveries of ancient sculptures; Vasari; transformations of the churches in the Counter-Reformation Age;
- the seventeenth century: Baldinucci; Collecting and Galleries; Boselli; the Time Painter; Bellori and Maratti;
- the eighteenth century: detachments and transports; the restoration in France; the restoration in Venice and Pietro Edwards;
- the nineteenth century: Viollet-le-Duc; Ruskin; architectural restoration in Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; Camillo Boito; restoration manuals (Secco Suardo, Forni)
- the first half of the twentieth century: Pellicioli; Artistic diagnostics; the Central Institute for Restoration; restoration and wars;
- Study and critical analysis of Cesare Brandi's work
-Giovanni Urbani and preventive conservation
-Umberto Baldini and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure

PART TWO: (8 hours)

In-depth examinations of individual case studies and museological and museographic experiences, with a special focus on protection, restoration, and the museum professions.

48 hours of frontal teaching

Oral Examination: The oral examination will be aimed at verifying the critical maturity of the student on the topics covered and analyzed in the classroom. A selection of topics and cases of restoration discussed in class will be the starting point for the tests. The evaluation of the student's preparation will also include the study and comprehension of the recommended bibliography.
