Obiettivi formativi

Obiettivo del corso è quello di guidare gli/le studenti/esse alla conoscenza elementare della cultura egiziana antica (3500-332 a. C.)  attraverso la disamina critica degli eventi storici maggiori de Paese e attraverso il commento  dei suoi principali monumenti artistici ed archeologici. Si intende ugualmente trasmettere la conoscenza di base circa i principali materiali organici e inorganici che compongono i manufatti ritrovati nella Valle del Nilo.

The course aims to lead students to fundamental knowledge of Ancient Egyptian culture (3500-332 b.C.) through the cricital exam of the main historical events and the study of its main artistica and archaeological monuments. The course also deals with main organic and inorganic materials of which Egyptian artefacts are made of.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Al termine dell’insegnamento, lo/a studente/ssa deve dimostrare le sue capacità di :

- conoscere i principali eventi che caratterizzano la storia dell’Egitto Antico a partire dal periodo predinastico fino alla conquista di Alessandro Magno

– conoscere i grandi monumenti archeologici e artistici dell’Egitto dall’Antico Regno fino alla conquista di Alessandro Magno

- riconoscere le principali evoluzioni di stile nei manufatti

- riconoscere e ricondurre i materiali archeologici alle varie classi e tipologie

At the end of the course, the student is expected:

- to know the main events of history of Ancient Egypt from the Prophetic period to the conquest of Alexander the Great

- to know the great archaeological and artistic monuments of Egypt from the Ancient Kingdom to the conquest of Alexander the Great

- to recognize the main changes in style of artefacts

- to recognize and to trace back archaeological materials to the different classes and typologies

Programma

L'insegnamento sarà diviso in due parti.

La prima sarà dedicata ad una introduzione alla storia e alla civiltà dell’Egitto antico, e svilupperà i seguenti argomenti:

  • Il contesto ambientale: geografia, paesaggio e risorse naturali.
  • Lineamenti di storia dell’Egitto predinastico e dinastico (3500-332 a.C.).
  • Indagine dei principali siti archeologici e delle più rilevanti testimonianze materiali, artistiche e architettoniche della Valle del Nilo.

La seconda parte del corso sarà dedicata allo studio dei principali materiali, organici ed inorganici, delle tecniche per la loro lavorazione e trasformazione, e di alcune tra le maggiori classi di oggetti prodotte a partire da essi. Specifici focus saranno, infine, dedicati a casi studio della collezione del Museo Egizio di Torino.

The teaching will be divided into two parts.

The first will be devoted to an introduction to the history and civilization of ancient Egypt, and will develop the following topics:

  • The environmental context: geography, landscape, and natural resources.
  • Outlines of the history of predynastic and dynastic Egypt (3500-332 BC).
  • Survey of the main archaeological sites and of the most relevant material, artistic and architectural evidences.

The second part of the course will be dedicated to the main organic and inorganic materials, to the techniques for their processing and transformation, and to some of the major classes of objects produced from them.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Conoscenze e capacità previste saranno verificate attraverso un colloquio orale con domande concernenti i diversi periodi storici della civiltà egiziana antica ed i principali monumenti artistici ed archeologici dell’Egitto predinastico e faraonico. La preparazione sarà considerata adeguata (con votazione espressa in trentesimi):

- se lo/la studente/ssa dimostrerà di conoscere le varie fasi che caratterizzano la storia dell’Egitto faraonico;

- se sarà capace di esprimersi chiaramente e con linguaggio appropriato;

- se dimostrerà di conoscere i tratti generali dell’evoluzione artistica nei monumenti d’epoca faraonica;

- se riconoscerà i manufatti e  i materiali archeologici riconducendoli alle principali classi e tipologie illustrate nei testi consigliati e/o commentati nel corso delle lezioni frontali.

Knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral interview with questions concerning the different historical periods of the ancient Egyptian civilization and the main artistic and archaeological monuments of Predynastic and Pharaonic Egypt. The preparation will be considered adequate (with a vote in thirties):

- if the student will demonstrate knowledge of the various phases that characterize the history of Pharaonic Egypt;

- whether he/she will be able to express itself clearly and in appropriate language;

- whether he/she will demonstrate knowledge of the general features of artistic evolution in the monuments of the Pharaonic era;

- whether he/she will recognise archaeological artefacts and materials by referring them to the main classes and types illustrated in the texts recommended and/or commented on during the lectures.
