Programma
PARTE 1 - Restauro di procedimenti fotografici positivi
I principali procedimenti fotografici storici, stampe su carta all'albumina, aristotipi e stampe su carta alla gelatina AgBr: struttura, fenomenologia di deterioramento, identificazione;
Progettazione dell'intervento e scheda di restauro di fotografia storica;
Indagini preliminari;
- l'identificazione delle problematiche di deterioramento e loro mappatura;
- le indagini preliminari;
- l’individuazione delle priorità d’intervento;
- la progettazione e realizzazione degli interventi;
PART 1 - Restoration of positive photographic processes
Main historical photographic processes, albumen prints, aristotypes, silver gelatin prints: structure, deterioration phenomenology, identification;
Restoration project;
Preliminary investigations;
Exercises on photographic positives: dry and solvent cleaning, consolidation of support and image layer, chromatic integration of image layer, humidification.
Identification of biological deterioration (mold and bacteria), cleaning of microbiological deterioration;
Conservation mounting and storage systems.
Interventions will be chosen and calibrated on the basis of original materials available.
PART 2 - Conservation and preservation of photographs: cased materials, negatives and non-silver printing processes
The course is an introduction to the history and manufacturing techniques of photographic materials as well as the methods that permit their identification. These include European and Anglo-American daguerreotypes and the various different types of nineteenth-century photographic negatives, as well as the more modern photographic films that followed them. Also the main photographic printing processes introduced after 1855, commonly defined as "non-silver processes", will be examined. These include the procedures based on the photosensitivity of iron salts (the platinotype, kallitype and cyanotype), as well as those using chromium salts (carbon, gum dichromate and greasy ink printing processes), and their most common variants.
Students will acquire the techniques for identifying the various photographic processes studied, as well as the specific forms of their physical, chemical and biological deterioration, by studying the reference collection which will be provided by the teacher.
Laboratory activities – consisting of interventions carried out on the original materials that are made available – will focus on:
- identifying, assessing and mappingdeterioration;
- preliminary scientific investigations;
- planning and implementingintervention priorities;
- conservation treatments;
- solutions for mounting of photographs and archival storage of theitems and/or collections under examination.
Conservation and preservation of cased materials: cleaning of the various elements of the protective container (consisting of a case or frame or a simple cardboard passe-partout), consolidation of damaged elements, removing a plate from its housing, and making a new conservation housing which maintains as much as possible the original appearance of the item, which is then preserved in a secondary protective housing.
Conservation and preservation of negatives: dry and solvent-based cleaning of the substrates and the image layer when possible; securing of broken glass plate negatives; archiving and storage techniques for collections of negatives on several different supports (paper, glass and plastic).
Conservation and preservation of non-silver photographic prints: dry and solvent-based cleaning; use of gels in conservation; repairing tears and losses; loss compensation; controlled humidification treatments and flattening methods; lining techniques; unmounting methods, methods and materials for inpainting on the image layer and/or primary or secondary support, mounting prints for archiving and display.
